End of the Reel (Super 8 Film)
How can I change a Tuscan Super 8 Standard 8 Spool & Can recorded tape to either video or cd?
My friend's early 80's wedding is on this reel and would like to know how to change it over to video or better still cd so that it can be viewed.
Please give any ideas as to who can do this. She has tried various places but nobody seems to know what to do. Thanks for your help.
Whew, film! You're dealing with film here, not tape. Many video transfer services (VHS to DVD, Hi8 to DVD, etc.), even many professional production houses, might not have the equipment to do this. Film's a different animal.
A good target format for such transfers is often DVD, though MiniDV tape can be good as well - less compression, and it'll be easy to work with it in editing programs if you want. I'm an editor, so my workflow would be to have someone put it on MiniDV, then I'd do my own DVD copy from that, and I'd have the MiniDV to edit if I wanted. But again, that's because this is a hobby of mine - I'm just pointing out the various types of services that are out there.
But it looks like viewing is the main goal, so DVD will keep things simple. There are many places that do this - some might be local, and some are places you ship to. A quick Google search for "film to DVD" gave me a few options. I have not worked with any of them, and I have not read reviews, so I have no word on customer satisfaction. There are many more places out there as well.
Some places do Blu-Ray disc as well, so you can get video in an HD format, nice if you have a Blu-Ray player.

In short, they're definitely out there. Do some research to find which ones know what they're doing, what services they offer, and are a best match with your budget. Then, figure out which format will work best for you.
Good luck!
Home Made Reel
You can easily make a home made reel; many reels are made everyday using re-bar and other materials readily available.
Not long ago I come across a carpenter unrolling air hose across a road. He had to string both electrical cord and air hose about 70 yards he built a reel using a wooden spool and a tripod re-bar frame with a rebar base which was light weight but still super strong. He used a piece of flat metal about 8 inches long with a shaft and a piece of plastic pipe to act as the crank to make his home made reel. It also had a 2 inch hole drilled in the side of the wooden spool which he left about 3 feet of hose stick out the hole so when it was strung out he could plug it into the compressor without unrolling all of the hose. It also had two small wheels on one end for transporting. I found it worked great other than every time the reel turned the piece of hose sticking out of the spool hit on the frame.
Another unique reel I saw in a mechanic shop was built with a pipe and two disks he rigged it so the hole travelled through the pipe allowing you to reel or unreel and not have to unplug the hose every time you wanted to roll or unroll. He said it worked good for first couple of weeks but soon began to leak air at the fittings causing the air compressor to run the whole time.
I often take pictures as I am interesting in the kinds of scraps people can use to create a working home made reel.
